How the South Beach Diet Works

The diet is split into three phases.

  • Phase I - During this first phase, you will eat normal meals of chicken, beef, turkey, fish, and shellfish; lots of vegetables, eggs, cheese, nuts, and garden salads. Each day for 14 days, you will eat three, well-balanced meals.

    You're actually allowed to eat as much as you like so long as you follow the plan. This is good because you are not starving yourself. Dieters should expect to lose somewhere between 8 to 13 pounds

  • Phase II - In this phase, some of the banned foods from phase I are slowly re-introduced into your diet while the weight loss continues at around 1-2 pounds per week. You should remain on it until you lost your desired amount of weight.

  • Phase III - This is the maintenance phase and is an extension of phase II. You should remain at your ideal weight here. If you find you are not following some of the rules and the weight starts coming on, you simply go back to phase I

There is no magic bullet - a healthy balanced diet with regular exercise seems to be the key.

Your diet should be about your health. The basic rules are:

  • Eat 5 portions of fruit or vegetables per day
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep alcohol in proportion
  • Exercise for 30 minutes 3 or 4 times per week
  • Eat the right proportion of fat, carbohydrates and proteins
